Solar
Solar power is a key tool in achieving energy conservation and efficiency, EMEP’s key mandate. Solar power is produced by generating electricity from solar energy, a renewable clean energy source and the most abundant on earth. Converting sunlight into electricity can be achieved using photovoltaic (PV) systems. Given Jamaica’s close proximity to the equator, we get higher solar insolation. Solar irradiance averages 5 kWh/m2/day over the year in Jamaica. This gives us ample opportunity to generate electric power from PV systems
For building envelop improvement, EMEP is applying the appropriate level of thermal insulation to roofs to reduce heat gain and upgrade fenestration to glazing type that combines the lowest solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) with the highest visible light transmittance (VLT). This will help reduce the conditioned building’s cooling load and its HVAC system’s energy use.
EMEP also intends to undergo a bio-waste container refrigeration optimization at various Health, Education and Public Agencies (HEPA) through the implementation of no-cost and low-cost measures, in order to reduce refrigeration unit’s cooling demand and improve cooling capacity.
